Your working life

During the pandemic many people were forced to work from home for their safety but many other people were not this lucky and were forced out of their jobs entirely. This pandemic has had a huge impact on the job market and in a lot of ways has completely changed the way people see their jobs and their working future in general. 

Working life looks very different to most people than it did three years ago. As someone who has always spent a lot of time at home I didn’t have to adjust like most people did. My routine didn’t change at all but a lot of people had to go through a huge adjustment period all while trying to figure out how best to be as productive in their job role while working from home or looking for new work entirely.

People who worked in sectors like the entertainment industry had to find new ways of bringing money in since people weren’t going to see live music, going out the clubs or seeing shows in the theatre. This forced a lot of people to take to the internet and try and reestablish themselves by providing services online like teaching exercise classes, doing online concerts and using other skills to start online based businesses. So many people turning to crafts to keep themselves busy while in quarantine ended up making small start up businesses selling hand made items and providing freelance services to keep themselves afloat.

The great resignation

In the article ”The Great Resignation’: Experts Reveal What The Future Of The Self-Employed Sphere Looks Like’ the author speaks to a number of experts and looks at the huge changes in working life that have been triggered by Covid-19

In my opinion one of the most surprising and most impactful findings was as follows;

“Another feature of the pandemic has been an increase in the number of new businesses being set up in the UK. Analysis of Companies House data carried out by small business lender iwoca found that 340,534 businesses were registered between January and June last year, compared to 257,243 during the same period in 2019. This represented a rise of 32%. London saw the biggest increase (59%), followed by the West Midlands (49%) and the North East (28%).” – Markel UK

With the introduction of new work from home platforms, many people starting their own small businesses and companies making adaptations to facilitate people being able to work productively from home, the future will most definitely see more and more work from home positions becoming available in the job market.
